Otter Slides….

You are invited to an audio-visual presentation on otters and Somerset wildlife by Ian Anderson at Brooklands Farm Dorset Wildlife Trust HQ on Tuesday 4th November at 7.30 Booking is essential, £3 entry fee.

Ian uses twin projectors with cross-fading images and a stereo soundtrack. The show on otters traces the fall and current recovery in otter numbers in the UK, and the reason for this. How otters live, their food and territory requirements and how we can help them are all explained, and a comparison is made between the conditions for otters in England and Scotland over the last 40 years. Ian was asked to photograph otters by the Vincent Wildlife Trust back in 1978, and was introduced to Dorset’s Angela Potter and Angela King who gave him an insight into otter habitats. Since then Ian has gone on to do many otter surveys both for the VWT and later for the Somerset Wildlife Trust. He has also written two books on otters with illustrations by his wife Gabrielle Bordewich (Gaby Anderson, who’s pictures are mostly illustrating this issue). Ian kindly donated an otter photograph to the Dorset Otter Group, which appears on the cover of our membership leaflet. Ian and Gaby have a cottage on the shore of Loch Slapin in the Isle of Skye where they still study otters in the wild.

The second show is called the Nature of Somerset, and is done to music. It goes from season to season depicting the landscape, animals, birds, butterflies and flowers of the area in which Ian lives and is shot almost entirely on the Quantock Hills. Slides for this show took a long time to accumulate, especially the winter shots.

Potter

Hermione’s Patronus, a shining silver otter, was gambolling around her…
They are sort of nice aren’t they? she said, looking at it fondly.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix

If you don’t know what a Patronus is then you are probably one of the few people who…

Potter (interrupting): Who is Harry Potter?
Myself: He is a boy with magical powers who appears in a series of books by J.K. Rowling. They are extremely popular.
Potter: Even more popular than otters?
Myself: Well, they have sold millions of copies.
Potter: But this Harry Potter is just a fictional character.
Myself: Yes, he’s rather like you in that respect.

Potter walks off in a huff….
