Post-Mortem Study

The Environment Agency has funded a post-mortem study of otters in England and Wales for several years; the data collected allows detailed analysis of the health status and chemical burden in otters. Road traffic accidents account for the majority of deaths in Dorset but this year we have found two cubs and an adult male otter drown in a fyke net on the Stour. An adult male otter also died as a result of a stick jammed between its teeth (at the back of the throat) on the Crane. The attached map shows where otters have been killed in the last three years. The graphs confirm numbers of deaths each year by sex and cause of death.

If you find a dead otter please report it as soon as possible (it needs to be fresh to get the best results) to Sandie Moors, Fisheries, Recreation & Biodiversity, Environment Agency Tel. 01258 483403
