2005 Dorset Otter Group Results
Another successful year for DOG, with 946 records being put forward
to Dorset Environmental Records Centre. The % of positives remained
roughly 30% throughout the year. Some of the apparent gaps in recording,
eg on the Bride, the Wey and the Fleet have now been addressed.
If you are a surveyor, you will find 4 new recording sheets enclosed,
along with a SURVEYOR CARD. The committee thought
it would be useful for surveyors to be able to identify themselves
to landowners etc if necessary, so please take this out with you
on your otter spotting trips.
Sheila Dawsey & Ann Hyland, two of the DOG surveyors, saw 2
otters, possibly 3, in Sherborne Castle Lake, early one morning
in October, whilst they were surveying. Ann writes “we watched
them for about 15 minutes swimming, playing and fishing. It was
an incredible site. .....The gate keeper thinks he has seen a dog
an female otter together – about 2 weeks ago – if so
we are hoping they are breeding.”
