2010/11 Annual Report

Towards the end of the summer term we attended the annual District Explorer Chill Camp at Braggers Wood, which featured a relaxed mix of activities and some open fire cooking. We also had a district wide game evening at Badbury Rings and a Beach BBQ to finish off the term.

In the autumn we went bowling. The weekends away included our annual hiking trip in Dartmoor and a County Halloween camp, as well as the Remembrance parade and a District Christmas party and sleep over. Over the winter months we have been working on creating material for a promotional video for the unit as part of a mixed programme that also included making face masks and exploring the inequities of international trade with a scenario from one of the international aid charities. We finished our term with a unit Christmas Party.

In the spring we tried a mountain rescue incident room challenge based on the Ogwen centre that is visited by North Dorset on their trips to Snowdonia. We tried our hand at making bird boxes and letter racks over several evenings and cooked several indian dishes. At the end of January we entered two teams into the county Frostbite Challenge, which this year finished at Buddens after a frosty night. The District Ski-Bobbing & Ringoing evening at Christchurch ski centre was well attended and enjoyed by all.

The Order of the Boot in March was well attended by the Scout Troops with assistance from many of the Explorers and Young Leaders to run through the night. We finished off the term with a trip to Lazer Quest and attending the Dare 2 B camp at Braggers Wood. Dare 2 B featured a hog roast and many activities including climbing, crate stacking, zip line, archery, bungee running, inflatable slide, archery, T-shirt glow painting and disco.

In May we attended Dragon 24 with activities running all night, including kayaking and dragon boating by floodlight, inflatables, kart racing, silent disco, climbing, cinema and a fairground. Also we have built a pioneering tower out of the large poles and practised our backwoods cooking.

The Corfe Mullen Carnival saw us back at our usual spot keeping visitors supplied with refreshments and cakes to raise funds for the unit and group.

We have maintained our core attendance and have seen growth of numbers both from within and outside scouting, with continued engagement in supporting the group across all sections with Explorer Scout Young Leaders.
